Abalone Diving Update

UPDATE: The red tide closure from September of 2011, will not affect the coming 2012 Abalone Season. The current information indicates that the affects of the red tide last fall were not as bad as predicted, and while the closure was a necessary precaution, this year's season should open on schedule. The only change to the season will come as part of a proposal that started last July. The need to reduce the take in the Fort Ross area of Sonoma County will result in the Fort Ross State Park opening for the season June 1st instead of April 1st. We encourage you to dive other areas when at all possible as this population can not sustain the amount currently taken there.

Sept. 15, 2011:

Due to the unprecedented red tide event that occurred on the Sonoma Coast in August/September of this year, the Department of Fish and Game have issued an emergency closure of the abalone fishery for the rest of the 2011 season. Please click here to view the details of this statement.Mendocino and northern counties are still open to abalone diving. For all of the updated information on this closure, as well as the proposed changes to the 2012 regulations, please visit the Fish and Game website.
